The burgers are just alright, but the garlic fries were so garlicky! I loved it. Somehow, they made it so that the fries would stay crispy even through the meal and the garlic was coating every single fry in a sticky garlicky goo. This might gross others out, but I loved it in all it’s garlic glory.

This place is famous for their salt and pepper crab, and I think it’s the batter that makes everyone come back for it. The whole crab is breaded and basically, nibbling all the batter off of the shell is all you need to be in salt nirvana – not for the faint at heart, literally. I bet all of our blood pressures went up a few points after eating the entire meal. The other dish that is darn tasty is the steamed egg custard and clams – tofu like consistency and nice chewy clams. Other standard fair of walnut shrimp, beef house special and pea shoots (dou miu) were good as well.

In the heart of napa, all of their ingredients are supposed to be organic and all veggies grown on site. Oh the freshness! I chose the house special of the soft shell crab + mustard greens + pumpkin pesto. The greens were a very tasty mix of the mustard greens, finely chopped lettuce, tomatoes, and lima beans, among others. It was very refreshing and the crab was nice and crispy on the outside and tender and moist on the inside.

daily special - soft shell crab + mustard greens salad + pumpkin pesto

Other dishes – Truckers Delight (tender ribeye), calamari + mustard greens slaw, Famous Mongolian Pork (great tangy flavor with the pork with tangy sides), blue cheese salad, ahi burger – ALL nicely done.

MONDAYS – Fried Chicken night

So on each day that they are open, a different menu is featured. It just so happened we made it on their famous fried chicken night!!!!!! It was the best tasting fried chicken, and it better be for that price. Again, located in napa valley, ingredients were very fresh and full of flavor.

ad hoc salad of the day – butter lettuce, fennel, apricot slices, almonds + rich unique ranch dressing
corn on the cob – cooked in whole butter. the most amazingly buttery corn ever.
garlic mashed potatoes – pretty standard
fried chicken – click on the picture. the seasoned fried batter on the outside was perfect and the chicken was super super dooper juicy and tender. i’m literally drooling as i talk about this chicken
cheese platter with pea shoot salad – tasty stinky cheeses.
homemade icecream sandwiches – i preferred the dark chocolate cookie sandwiches with rich vanilla bean icecream over the chocolate chip icecream sandwiches. that’s just because i luv dark chocolate =)

4. Robert Mondavi Winery

Ha haha… no no. Of course, I’m going to rave about the wine at a winery! It’s about the one piece of food they offered! arancini! Glorified/fancified deep fried rice and cheese ball is where it’s at. woot woot.

If you’re a lover of egg tarts, you have to try this at least once. I agree that the custard to crust ratio is not quite right (less custard, more crust? or mini size it?), but you have to look past it once you take that first bite of buttery, flaky crust with the warm (almost hot) custard because they took it right from the oven. It is heaven. This time around I have to admit that the crust was slightly saltier and crispier from previous experiences, but still fantastic. WARM. FLAKY. GOODNESS.

Unique? but….

Open Mon-Sat 4:30pm-10pm

I’m not sure if it was because I had high expectations going in that I was let down or that Todd’s Unique Dining just wasn’t that unique? I think with a name like that I expected Vitner/Rosemary level of bomb-diggity-ness. It was good food, but did not wow me. No *bouncing or *clapping here. I’m not feeling the urge to go back and plunk down more muneeee…. =P (apologies for blurry pictures…I even had my tripod!)

Crispy Rice and Tuna Tartar, Soy Wasabi Vinaigrette Toffee Cheesecake Crunch Cake Seared ahi tuna, wasabi mashed & soy garlic sauce Kobe short rib, jalapeno mashed and carmelized onion sauce Clam Chowder - daily special House Salad Watermelon salad, pepitas, cayenne, lime & feta Dungeness Crab Ckae with Spicy Remoulade and baby greens Goat Cheese Wonton Raspberry Basil Sauce DSC_0001

1. Crispy Rice and Tuna Tartar, Soy Wasabi Vinaigrette – This was the only item I really liked because of the crispy texture of the rice and the spicy tuna combination.
2. Goat Cheese Wonton Raspberry Basil Sauce – maybe I don’t have a discerning tongue for cheese, but it just tasted like a regular cream cheese wonton.
3. Dungeness Crab Cake with Spicy Remoulade and baby greens – I’ve had better at many other places, but this one was decent.
4. Kobe Short Ribs Jalapeno Mashed Carmelized Onion Sauce – Very tender. Good for a few bites, but kind of salty after a few more. Needed some rice with it! hahahah
5. Watermelon Salad, pepita, cayenne, lime & feta – the person who had it thought it was “interesting”
6. Sear Ahi tuna, wasabi mashed & soy garlic sauce – mash + the fish was pretty tasty, but nothing spectacular and unique. had before at other restaurants.
7. Oyster Chowder – standard chunky chowder plus a seafoody taste
8. Mahi Mahi stuff with crab – kind of fishy, but overall okay.
9. Toffee Cheesecake – There this particular after taste of a cheesecake that makes a cheesecake good. Does anyone know what I’m talking about? This one had it.
10. Crunch cake – a mousse cake with a crunch like shell, very rich and sweet.

Indian Curry Bowl gives me yummies in my tummie

01.28.2012 UPDATE: Indian Curry Bowl has closed (Possibly due to decreased quality of food and poor reviews???) Sad….

This girl (*points to self with both thumbs) is soooo LUcky to have good eats around her! woot. Indian Curry Bowl is another semi-fast food/semi-sit down joint in the northwest Las Vegas area and also down the street from Market Grille Cafe. It’s located just down from Fresh & Easy and in the same shopping center as 24hr Fitness and Cafe Rio.

All the dishes are MOM-cooked and the mama’s are all super nice, too!

Even though I haven’t tried everything, I can confidently jump to the conclusion that everything is probably pretty good. The curry isn’t as thick as other Indian curries I’ve had, but I definitely like the flavor resulting from all the spices. You can asked for the chili on the side if you’re eating with people with different tolerance levels for heat. Personally, I luv that stuff! gimme gimme gimme…

extra chili!

Here’s what I tried so far… (per the owner, all chicken is chicken breast)
1. Garlic Naan – slightly charred, but it was nice and chewy. Lil’ bit of burnt taste gives it flavor… haha

2. Vegetable Samosa – (Deep fried, but not too greasy. When do I ever say “no” to deep fried?)
3. Butter Chicken – similar to chicken tikka

4. Chicken Tikka Masala (Tomato based curry)
5. Chicken Saag (Spinach based stew)
6. Chicken Korma (Coconut based curry)

p.s. They have a lunch special for a curry bowl that’s $5.95+, depending on the extras you get. YUmmy curry on fluffy rice = happy lunch time nap.
