Their grand opening for this location was today, so we decided to take a lookey. Boy, were we pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere has a laid back beach/hawaiian feel to it. The staff was super dooper friendly and helpful. Most importantly, their sandwiches were fantastic, flavor wise and texture wise and size wise (gi-normous!)!

1. Class Cheese Steak (HOT SANDWICH) – “Thin-sliced roast beef sauteed with onions and peppers, smothered in melted Mozzarella cheese on a fresh baked roll.” This is right off their menu description. I couldn’t have put it any better! It was juicy, hot and the roll was soft and fluffy.

2. The Priva (COLD SANDWICH) – “Slow roasted hand-pulled turkey, cranberry sauce, cream cheese, lettuce and mayo and a fresh baked roll.” The most amazing part of this sandwich was the REAL turkey! It definitely looked hand-pulled to all the right small pieces. The perfect amount of cranberry, mayo and cream cheese was in there, on top of the perfectly finely chopped fresh lettuce. All in all, it was texture-gasmic. The crunch of the lettuce, with the tangy combination of the cranberr-mayo-creamcheezynes, and the roasty wholesome turkey taste all on a fluffy bun was very satisfying.

p.s. They have other locations in the valley, and we were informed that they may be opening more. woot!

2009.10.08 update – The Priva has changed to have sprouts and no cranberry sauce. However, the del mar is a close version, and ask for the bread roll instead of sliced bread.

Is was about 4 years ago that I went and was super impressed. 4 years later, I am equally impressed. Right when they set the steak down, they have you cut into it to make sure it is made to your liking. I had the filet mignon – rare with cold center. The steak was perfectly seared on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside.

Conclusion: Consistent. Flavorful. A great classic steakhouse.

It is one of the older Vietnamese restaurants and in my opinion, one of the more tasty and consistent Vietnamese restaurants in Las Vegas. (Of course, let’s not compare to Westminster, please). I decided to not have my usuals of either pho tai or bun cha gio/thit nuoung. I chose to have something I haven’t had in a while – Bun Bo Hue, a spicy beef noodle soup. It had nice bits of pork’s blood, pork slices, a gelatinous pig foot and some yummy beef. It wouldn’t say it was the best I’ve had, but it was spicy and satisfying. *slurp slurp

Conclusion: average korean bbq, not bad for AYCE in Vegas. it ain’t no k-town, so don’t expect too much.

U Swirl, U… kinda suck?

USwirl

First of all, USwirl employee wouldn’t let me get my own free sample. I thought Uswirl meant that I would swirl it myself? Ok, looking past that fact, the tart flavored yogurt itself is too creamy for my liking. I was looking more for a pinkberry/yogurtland/tart texture – something more refreshing and light. Maybe I’ll like it when the weather cools down? NOT.

Conclusion: Too creamy for me. If you likey creamy, check it out.
[12.16.2009 – lemme rephrase, if i was looking for regular frozen yogurt, i’d go to golden spoon or yogel’s. however, i was looking for pinkberry-esque yogurt and uswirl did not fit the bill.]

Salty ungoodness

Although I really enjoyed the toasty texture of the bread, chicken pesto sandwich was toooooo salty but the bf seemed to enjoy it. Too salty “creamy” tomato soup that looked like it was in the process of coagulating some miso. ew………… and they got my soup order wrong and told us that we had ordered the baked potato soup. ;/

Atlanta Bread Company - Chicken Pesto Panini

Conclusion: go to Panera or Corner Bakery for better quality/taste of food.

Ok, so yelp has really good reviews and my friends say it’s fantastic, but I was disappointed, yet, again. Don’t get me wrong, it was good, but for my visit this past weekend, it does not compare to the others (N9NE, Del Frisco’s, Morton’s, Maestro’s), where I’ve walked out with the feeling of complete satisfaction.

The bone-in ribeye prepared medium rare was decent but not super juicy. The sea bass and their bleu cheese wedge salad were good, but as I’ve mentioned in my previous post, both at Kalani’s are better. The mushrooms under my sea bass were overcooked, super shriveled, and some were almost dry! Their signature truffle fries were super tasty and crispy, but I’m not sure I tasted any of the truffle oil? If it was there, it was definitely overpowered by the parmesan and salt.

Conclusion: Call me crazy, but I’ve had better. =P

Tucked in South Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Village, I wouldn’t think there’d be any Asian culinary delights, but we stumbled upon Kalani’s, a hawaiian/asian fusion restaurant, and we were pleasantly surprised on the quality of food that we ate. The bleu cheese wedge salad was fantastic. It’s not a hard dish to mess up but it was very refreshing and the balance of dressing, bleu cheese and lettuce ratio was perfect. May I be bold to say that my chunk of sea bass was the best I’ve ever had! It was amazing! I know I know … it’s hard to mess up sea bass, too, but this was so juicy, tender and cooked juuuuuuuuuuust right, not overcooked one bit. Compared to Envy Steakhouse’s sea bass, Kalani’s wins hands down.
