I count my lucky stars that I am so fortunate to be able to finally eat at é by José Andrés. It was a special occasion and we (surprisingly my husband included because he usually prefers cheap Chinese food over frou frou stuff) both thoroughly enjoyed the EXPERIENCE. It was a precisely choreographed dance to put together these pieces of food, a play on textures, temperatures and flavors. It was an experience with the art of food, and I’m not saying it with any disdain for snobbiness this time. There were 24 morsels of delicious food – all incredibly creative.

The short and sweet version: Precision. Perfectly choreographed and executed. Juxtaposition of Flavors and Textures. Adjectives that come to mind: Fragrant. Whimsical. Airy. Crunchy. Ice Cold. Salty and Sweet. Warm. Fluffy. Umami. Crumbly

The extended version – the tasty thoughts on each morsel:

Milk Tea, Cafe Sua Da and Soy Milk Banh Beo

Mr. Sandwich a offshoot restaurant of Hue Thai and looks like it’s designed to be a quick meal stop. They’ve got a straight forward menu of quick vietnamese eats like sandwiches, curries and rice plates. When we come here we come for banh mi. Though the bread a little too buttery for my tastes, I like the efficiency and convenience of the place. Run in – get lunch and quench some thirst with fun drinks like a taro smoothie, soy milk and high in caffeine cafe sua da.

Search for good noodles

Zha Jiang Mian

In our un-ending search for a good noodle and more specifically the spicy beef noodle soup, we’ve landed ourselves at Noodle Pot on a Sunday night. Wowsers! The place was packed with mom’s, dad’s, grandma and grandpa tourists. It is a sign that the food is great if it’s mom and grandma approved!

Spicy Beef Noodle Soup – Slight kick of spice, some beef cubes were tender and some were not. Intense beefy flavor. Noodles not super bouncy but good enough.
Zha Jiang Mian – Same noodles, but now tossed with hearty sauce with pork, bits of bean curd and cucumbers

Conclusion: Yi Mei Champion Deli is still the winner with the broth of the spicy beef noodle soup a little more intense in simmering-for-hours-beefy flavor.

Comfort Curry

Japanese Curry Zen

It’s a rainy day in Vegas. It’s literally dropped at least 20 or so degrees and the temperature hovers around 50 degrees. What?! Only thing to do is to eat something warm and cozy. Curry it is. Curry Zen recently opened in what seems to becoming famous plaza on Spring Mountain and Decatur with the likes of Raku, Monta, Trattoria Nakamura-ya and Kabuto.

We enter into Curry Zen and it’s cozy and cute. The menu is simple. Pick your protein or carb and you get your plateful of aromatic Japanese style curry with fluffy pillows of rice.

Croquette Chicken Katsu

1. Chicken Katsu Curry – Crispy breading on the outside, white chicken meat on the inside.
2. Croquette Curry – A combination of peas, carrots, and potatoes with a crispy crunchy breaded exterior. Carb-licious.

Conclusion: It was comforting food on a rainy day. I had a fleeting thought that the menu was a little too simple, but perhaps, keeping it super simple is a good thing. Quality control ya? I made the mistake of getting 1 croquette ONLY and was still hungry! Don’t forget to order more protein and you’ll leave with a full satisfied belly. 3.25/5 Average beeps
