About Fat Girl

Who is Fat Girl?
I am a native Las Vegan, born and raised, but I love to travel anywhere for great food to eat! I do not claim to be any sort of food guru or expert. However, I do love to share my excitement about food whenever I find a great place, whether it be from a 3 michelin star restaurant to the dumpiest hole in the wall ever. Nor am I a writing genius, so please, don’t pick on my poor grammar and fatgirl-ism’s (nommerific, mutha’ beepin’ good, etc.)

I’m a just a girl who wants to share her thoughts on great food finds and try to warn you of the bad. I’d love to hear your comments and opinions (delicious or not) on what you think about the food, too! Now, let’s get eating!

How am I going to rate my food?
Usually, I just like to talk about the food in detail and leave it at that, but after some thought and the star posting with my occasional double post on yelp, I’m implementing the “beep” system. 1 beep = uncool and untasty to the max, 5 beeps = fantastic, nommerific, texturgasmic/texturegasm, mutha’ beepin’ good!

Characteristics that may up the beeps exponentially
Hole in the wall feel
Texturerrific foods = perfect noodles, deep fried goodness, chewy/crunchy
Tastes like mom made it
Flavor blasts when appropriate (I.e. Cheese, truffle oil, bacon!, foie
GRAS, fresh herbs, garlic is always gooooood)
May be made of the nasty bits but I love processed meats: spam, corned beef!

Characteristics that may decrease the beeps:
Swanky, trendy, overly pretentious
Soggy or other texture fails
Tastes like store bought
Flavor blasts when inappropriate (i.e. Too much salt, poor ratio of
sugar to salt or other herbs)

Why I usually do NOT comment on service
I usually don’t give a rats bootay about the service because I put most of my emphasis and enjoyment on the quality of food. Thus, this is why hole-in-the-wall establishments with poor service and questionable health department standards can reach 5 beeperoos for mutha’ beepin’ good food, and swanky places can get zero beeps. If it sucks enough for me to put them on blast like what we got at Crapsteak, then you know it’s gotta be bad.

The Origin of Fat Girl
So, the story goes that when I was a kid, I was the chubby lil’ girl with the lil’ chinese kid bowl cut.  So chubby, in fact, that all my aunts loved to affectionately squish my fat rolls.  I grew up in a household where the kitchen was definitely the center of life and cooking and enjoying food was a component of many happy and delicious memories on mom and dad cooked Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine. Now, I’m all grown up (for the most part ^_^*) and no longer chubby, but still very much so a food lover.

Brother and Little Sister

Just in case you wanted to gauge my tastes in food, read below:
Favorite Cuisine: Asian anything… stuff bursting with flavors like italian, korean, thai, etc
Favorite Dishes: too many and too diverse to narrow it down; however, mom’s homemade bun rieu comes to mind… mmm…
Favorite Desserts: Tiramisu, Red Bean Dumplings from Ding Tai Fung, Forever mint chocolate chip icecream with small chips from baskin robbins in a cake cone.
Favorite Drinks: Grass Jelly Drink from Phoenix Restaurant and Yeo’s/Gu Dao Green Tea (lightly Sweetened)
Favorite Junk Foods: Cheddar and Sour Cream Ruffles (regular or baked), various asian snacks like spicy fuzzy beef jerky, salt and seaweed chips, red bean vanilla icecream “fishes,” green bean popsicles, and dark chocolate… sweet sweet dark chocolateeee
Best meal ever: Rosemary’s Restaurant and Raku (2009). Echigo always impresses – melt in your mouth omakase fish! (see post here or here)
My Original Recipes: My Spam Fried Rice and other fried rice variations
Favorite Restaurants: I don’t think that I have an all time favorite because each fantastic restaurant is unique. Also, there are always more restaurants to try! I’m constantly in search of a great place to eat that can wow my senses whether it be a hole in the wall, mom-pop or totally swanky restaurant. If it’s good, I’ll pay for it and rave about it in my blog. You’ll know. Like someone said, I am the only person they know who can be content talking about food for hours. Yes, I can really do that…
Foods I hate: I hate foods with bad and inappropriate texture. i am a texture whore. if the texture is wrong, i will not like it. i’m all about the perfectly cooked texture of my food. for example, if my noodles are way too overcooked and soggy, that’s a no go even if the flavor is unbelievable. perfect example: juicy flavorful meat of a xiao long bao but the skin of the bao is too soggy and too thick, or steak that is not tender and juicy, or bread too mushy, or pasta/ramen too soggy… bah.

Places I’ve been (to eat ^_^*): Europe [London, Paris, Florence, Pisa, Rome/Vatican, Venice, Lucerne], Asia/Southeast Asia [Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau, Zhu Hai, Thailand (Pattaya, Bangkok), Malaysia, Singapore], Vancouver, Montreal, Niagra Falls, New York City, Pennsylvania, DC, Oahu, Maui, Vietnam (HCMC, Hanoi, Bac Kan), Atlanta (GA), Oahu, All over California Nor and So Cal! Woot!, and Nevada (Reno, Boulder City, Las Vegas)….
