New Bachi Burger!

Hooray! Bachi Burger, the famous fusion burger joint in town has expanded and landed in the west side of town. Hearty burgers and delicious sides were calling my name!

Walking in, looks like they’ve done a swell job of decorating. It looks modern, clean, hip and still features photography from artists posted on their walls. Service was snappy, responsive and done with a genuine smile.

On to the food!
1. Calamari – Bachi Burger has taken this appetizer to a new level. The bits of squid are fried delicately and they stay crunchy. Tossed in are bits of mint, grilled cherry tomatoes and slices of grilled lemon, turning the dish into something light and flavor blasted. The sauces paired were the traditional tartare sauce and a green chili sauce. What I found was the best flavor combo? Double dipping the tarter and the chili sauce!
2. Ronin Burger – My Angus Beef was juicy and tender. The caramelized onions and miso goma dressing enhanced the beef flavor. The Japanese Cole Slaw added the perfect refreshing crunch and the runny yolk from the fried egg always add a extra bonus factor – GOOEY!. If the sauces inside weren’t enough, I also chose to dunk the burger in the citrus aioli for an extra flavor blast.
3. Miyagi Burger – Is this a new one? I’m not sure that I’ve seen it at the other location, but this tasty as well. Where the Ronin provided a “refreshing” burger (if burgers could be refreshing), the Miyagi provided a “extra savory” experience. It too had a juicy meat patty and a fried egg, but what makes this one stand out is the sea aroma from the furikake. Mmmm mmmm seaweed bonus.
4. Truffle Parmesan fries – Of course we need some spuds to go with our burgers! This is a seriously addicting side dish. Shoestring fries drizzled with their special concoction of truffle oil and sprinkled with parmesan cheese.

Conclusion: These past few years have grown in the fusion food world, and Bachi brings it to the next level with the excellent quality of food and service. They have this new location dialed in!

Gastronomic Destruction!!!!

This vacay to San Fran was utter destruction to all levels of health in my body due to too much good food! Destruction!!!

The burgers are just alright, but the garlic fries were so garlicky! I loved it. Somehow, they made it so that the fries would stay crispy even through the meal and the garlic was coating every single fry in a sticky garlicky goo. This might gross others out, but I loved it in all it’s garlic glory.

This place is famous for their salt and pepper crab, and I think it’s the batter that makes everyone come back for it. The whole crab is breaded and basically, nibbling all the batter off of the shell is all you need to be in salt nirvana – not for the faint at heart, literally. I bet all of our blood pressures went up a few points after eating the entire meal. The other dish that is darn tasty is the steamed egg custard and clams – tofu like consistency and nice chewy clams. Other standard fair of walnut shrimp, beef house special and pea shoots (dou miu) were good as well.

In the heart of napa, all of their ingredients are supposed to be organic and all veggies grown on site. Oh the freshness! I chose the house special of the soft shell crab + mustard greens + pumpkin pesto. The greens were a very tasty mix of the mustard greens, finely chopped lettuce, tomatoes, and lima beans, among others. It was very refreshing and the crab was nice and crispy on the outside and tender and moist on the inside.

Other dishes – Truckers Delight (tender ribeye), calamari + mustard greens slaw, Famous Mongolian Pork (great tangy flavor with the pork with tangy sides), blue cheese salad, ahi burger – ALL nicely done.

MONDAYS – Fried Chicken night

So on each day that they are open, a different menu is featured. It just so happened we made it on their famous fried chicken night!!!!!! It was the best tasting fried chicken, and it better be for that price. Again, located in napa valley, ingredients were very fresh and full of flavor.

homemade icecream sandwiches – i preferred the dark chocolate cookie sandwiches with rich vanilla bean icecream over the chocolate chip icecream sandwiches. that’s just because i luv dark chocolate =)

4. Robert Mondavi Winery

Ha haha… no no. Of course, I’m going to rave about the wine at a winery! It’s about the one piece of food they offered! arancini! Glorified/fancified deep fried rice and cheese ball is where it’s at. woot woot.

If you’re a lover of egg tarts, you have to try this at least once. I agree that the custard to crust ratio is not quite right (less custard, more crust? or mini size it?), but you have to look past it once you take that first bite of buttery, flaky crust with the warm (almost hot) custard because they took it right from the oven. It is heaven. This time around I have to admit that the crust was slightly saltier and crispier from previous experiences, but still fantastic. WARM. FLAKY. GOODNESS.

UPDATE: 07.21.2009 – After reading this review, it may be misleading that the food is good, but in so many words, I meant to say that this place has average Italian food but for a nice atmosphere. There ya go. =)

We walk into the doorway and we are in a holding tank of some sort. Look around to see a doorbell and go to push it, and all of a sudden we here a gruff Italian gangsta voice right behind us greet us. Then he asks us if we’re here with two others. Saying “yes,” he opens the main door and we enter into a dark restaurant set up which kind of reminds me of where the Godfather would eat on a late night in New York.

Service is great ‘cept for the lady who was in charge of clearing our plates seems overly zealous at her job. AND, of course, I wouldn’t be writing about this place if the food wasn’t worth it. We got the calamari (light, crunchy with tangy marinara sauce), caesar salad (standard and tasty), lasagna (super meaty. good but couldn’t eat too much of it), some sort of cleverly named seafood pasta (also, tasty but heavy), and MY FAVORITE of the night – classic spagetti and 1 ginormous meatball. The spagetti was al dente (which it should be in any respectable Italian restaurant) and sauce just right. yum yum! For dessert, we chose the tiramisu…. I haven’t had a good tiramisu in a long time. I find that some tiramisu’s can be too rich, but this one was just sweet enough and not too overwhelming with the creaminess and coffee taste.

Recommendations: Spagetti and Tiramisu.
