Just when you thought you’ve had it all and what could possibly be THAT different with yet another ice cream. Welp, Gelato Messina sure showed me!

The run down: This company awesomely Australian and they couldn’t be more nice and down to earth. Declan one of the owners personally presented to us fellow food bloggers and writers (shout out to Amber and her guy Bronson at!). His marketing team was also awesome. Ok, ok, back to the food. Because food has gotten so commercialized, it’s really nice to see the company brings back the passion and the love for quality food, and you could really tell that love is put into everything. Ingredients are all made in house (except for two type of biscuits). They’ve got an army of staff back there. Flavors and textures are incredible! Tiramisu has all the textures of creamy, cakey lady fingers, and hint of alcoholiness (yes, I made up “alcoholiness”). How are the fruit sorbets so creamy? The salty sweet combination of salted coconut and mango blew my mind. Pistachio gelato? I can taste real pistachios! It is true that it is “So Wrong Its Right” with cream cheese, caramel gelato smashed with white chocolate potato chips and smothered in duck fat caramel. So many delicious flavors, but if I had to choose one, the winner of the day is salted caramel with white chocolate. I guess my tastes are changing – salty sweet is gaining favor in my world.

Gelato Messina is not only offering an amazingly unique spread of gelato flavors, but also on top of that, they offer beautifully constructed gelato cakes and coffee.

Conclusion: This is the place to be if you want unique, complex flavors made with the most fresh and natural ingredients with fantastic texture. I know it’s the place for me because it’s almost in my backyard!

District One Kitchen & Bar

District One Kitchen & Bar

District One in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (a.k.a. Saigon for ya old schoolers) is the hip district to be in Vietnam. It’s the most industrial and even has it’s own Rodeo Drive-esque area to shop in.

Bring this back to District One Kitchen & Bar in Las Vegas. It’s hip. It’s new. It’s a twist on Vietnamese food. While our parents generation may complain that portion sizes are small (really?) and it’s too expensive (*tsk tsk to us spendy American born children), but I find it a refreshing spin on food that wasn’t necessarily viewed as trendy before. Looking around the restaurant, it brings in people from all walks of life to enjoy fresh, tasty foods with inspired by vibrant colors and tastes of Vietnamese food. Go try it yourself. Just don’t bring your immigrant parents. 😉

Happy Chinese New Year, everyone! Hope the new year brings you wellness, fortune and of course, good food!

Vegas never ceases to amaze me with off the beaten path finds. Just when you think, “what kind of GOOD food could exist out in the ‘burbs,” something pops up and begins roots of becoming food famous. Then you think, “No, no, no. Don’t become too famous because that means we will have to wait for a table!” At the end of last year, DW Bistro was that gem, and obviously, hoards of people line up for Saturday morning brunch.

Tonkatsu Kiyoshi is my first gem of 2014. As the name describes, this is a katsu-ya, a restaurant specifically for the delicacy of katsu, which is usually deep fried breaded chicken or pork, or in the case of this restaurant’s namesake, TONkatsu for breaded and deep fried PORK cutlet.

chicken karage chicken katsu curry tonkatsu

If you have had my share of tonkatsu and chicken katsu, it can be a spectrum of quality. Either it’s too greasy and chewy, breading falling off or at Tonkatsu Kiyoshi, it is wonderfully crispy, golden, light and juicy. As an added bonus, you can mix your own sauce and grind your own sesame powder with provided mortar and pestles. Dip away with your own concoction. If you’re just in the mood to chow down and not worry about the sauce, I would also recommend trying out their curry. This is honestly the best Japanese curry that I’ve had in VEGAS. Other places have popped up previous to them opening like Curry Zen and Kaba Curry, but they don’t compare at all to the katsu curry here.

Conclusion: Amazing texture, amazing flavor, great value. Now, DO NOT go there, and make it super busy for my selfish reasons. 😉

Outside Box

Being in Vegas, I haven’t had the pleasure of enjoying the famous creation of Dominique Ansel or copy cats until now. Coco Donuts offer the decadent version in a few different varieties, and I ventured to try their cinnamon sugar with bavarian cream. First bite in, I enjoyed the sugary crispy crust with fluffy powdered sugar. Full bite in, I sunk my teeth through the full thickness of all the flaky layers. I was a tad disappointed by it being more doughy than light and airy, but the overall package is definitely a crowd pleasure. It wasn’t too sweet, and I thought the amount of cream piped in was just right, not too overwhelming and letting the buttery layers of the cronut speak for themselves.

Conclusion: Bravo Coco Donuts. Thanks for the cheery service and mom pop donuts. I got a whole dozen to take care of!

In N Out Secret Menu Taste Test

In N Out

My friends know me as a food lover, but my husband knows the truth about me – I can be a food nitpicker. I nitpick and complain on texture, hence my other nickname, the texture whore. So, why am I talking about texture with In-N-Out? It is because they keep it texture-riffic. Veggies are crispy and not limp. Buns are usually toasty. Fries are golden and light. Ketchup is stored ice cold. Shakes are creamy. This is why I couldn’t resist going back to try some “secret menu” items.

What we ordered:
Number 1 Combo. Double-double – Regular.
Number 2 Combo. Cheeseburger, “secret options” = extra toasted (bun), animal style onions, and well done fries.

Receipt Cold ketchup Regular vs Secret Menu

If you look carefully at the burger photo, you can see on the left burger is my animal style cheeseburger with “extra toasty” bun, and on the right, you see the more golden “well done” fries.

Alright, time for texture whore to nitpick. The bun was NOT extra toasty. I mean I could see that it WAS toasted, but somehow became UN-toasted in the process of getting from the grill to me. I think logistically it would not be possible with my combination of animal style AND extra toasty. The fact that it had to sit a few minutes wrapped up with hot meat and sauces waiting for the well done fries added critical minutes and steam to the bun before it landed in my watering mouth. However, I’ll give them this – the extra juices from having the onions animal style made up for the toasted-reverted-to-untoasty bun. The trade-off of this logistical snafu was that the well done fries were fantastic. Crunchy without loosing the tooth feel of the a real spud and salted just enough. Also, I think because they had to fry my batch of fries especially, I received more fries in my batch. Bonus!

Conclusion: Next trip, only two secret options out of three. Animal style burger and regular fries. Extra toasted burger bun and well done fries. Animal style + extra toasted + well done fries = soft bun from all the steam.

Milk Tea, Cafe Sua Da and Soy Milk Banh Beo

Mr. Sandwich a offshoot restaurant of Hue Thai and looks like it’s designed to be a quick meal stop. They’ve got a straight forward menu of quick vietnamese eats like sandwiches, curries and rice plates. When we come here we come for banh mi. Though the bread a little too buttery for my tastes, I like the efficiency and convenience of the place. Run in – get lunch and quench some thirst with fun drinks like a taro smoothie, soy milk and high in caffeine cafe sua da.
