SF Las Vegas Supermarket

On a quick trip to the Asian supermarket, there was a rumbly in my tummy, so good thing I remembered that SF actually offers one of my favorite snacks/lunch time meals, banh mi (vietnamese sandwiches)! Today, I chose to go “healthy” and ordered the grilled chicken banh mi (ga noung), rather than my usual fav of thit nuong (grilled pork). While standing there waiting for my sandwich, I also noticed that this SF’s food counter offers vietnamese style pastries and dessert (all kinds of che!).
Ok, back to the sammich thoughts:
Bread was fresh, fluffy and toasty. I usually prefer the baguette to have a bit more chewiness/crustiness, but at least it wasn’t crunchy, hard to chew and cut up my gums a la Lee’s Sandwiches. The pickled daikon and carrots were standard with a nice pickled zing. The chicken was not too flavorful, but alas, that is what I get for going for chicken breast. The “grilled” chicken reminded me more of a cha siu (chinese bbq pork) type of preparation. The outside reddish-pink. There was no grilled taste at all, and I saw them reheat it in the microwave. Eep!
Conclusion: Don’t expect gourmet delicious Banh mi fo’ sho’. It’s decent sandwich for 3 bucks if you’re on the run. Will go back and try the thit noung and report back. 2 beeps out of 5.
Btw, anyone know when that Lee’s Sandwich down the street is going to open? I’d like to see how the Vegas counterpart will taste…
